OxyContin is a strong prescription medication that contains the semi-synthetic opioid oxycodone. Most commonly prescribed to treat mild-to-severe pain, OxyContin also induces sensations of relaxation and euphoria, which makes the drug popular among individuals who are seeking an illicit recreational high. Regardless whether a person begins using OxyContin for legitimate medical reasons, for unsupervised self-medication, or for recreational purposes, the drug poses a high risk for addiction, which can be extremely difficult to overcome in the absence of an effective rehab center’s professional intervention.

As is the case with other natural and synthetic opioids, oxycodone interacts with receptors in the brain that are associated with pleasure and pain and that are located in the area of the brain where respiration, heart rate, and other automatic functions are controlled. Thus, in addition to the pleasurable analgesic effects that are associated with OxyContin use, the drug also slows a person’s breathing and heart rate. As a result, overdose, which is always a risk when people are abusing OxyContin, can be fatal. Those who continue to abuse OxyContin also expose themselves to a range of non-lethal yet still highly distressing symptoms.

At Mirror Lake, we have decades of combined experience working with individuals who have become dependent upon OxyContin and other prescription medications, and we have developed effective treatment methods that have helped people overcome the compulsion to abuse this dangerous substance. With treatment from Mirror Lake, the darkness of OxyContin abuse can give way to the promise of a happier and healthier future, free from the constraints of addiction.

Steps to Help a Loved One

Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get OxyContin Abuse Treatment

If you care about someone who has been abusing OxyContin, the steps described in this section can help you make a significant positive impact on your loved one’s life.

First, you should familiarize yourself with OxyContin, oxycodone, and other opioids. The more you understand about how opioids can affect a person’s mind and body, the better prepared you will be to offer meaningful support and suggest actionable solutions.

Next, it is an excellent idea to speak with experts who can provide you with additional insights into OxyContin addiction and rehab. Mental health professionals, addiction counselors, and even your family doctor can be invaluable resources in your efforts to identify treatment options for your loved one.

While your loved one is in rehab, and after he or she has returned home, do your best to demonstrate your continued support whenever and wherever you can. Participate in family programs if possible. Accompany him or her to follow-up appointments or aftercare treatment sessions. Especially in the early days of his or her sobriety, provide whatever tangible assistance you can so that your loved one can focus on his or her recovery.

Most importantly, realize that your loved one is struggling with a condition that will require long-term effort to overcome. There will be success and setbacks on his or her road to lifelong recovery. Your active and informed presence can make a real and lasting difference.

Why Consider Treatment

Why Consider Treatment for OxyContin Abuse at Mirror Lake Recovery Center in Tennessee

The continued abuse of OxyContin has been associated with a wide range of negative outcomes. People who fail to get rehab for their OxyContin addiction may experience vision problems, heart damage, impaired functioning of other organs, and respiratory problems. OxyContin abuse can also cause a person to experience mood swings, engage in reckless behaviors, have problems thinking clearly and making good judgments, and struggle with low self-esteem and depression. A person whose mind and body has been impacted in such a way by continued OxyContin abuse is likely to also have problems maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships, performing to potential in school or at work, meeting financial responsibilities, and otherwise participating in a healthy and productive life. Since the abuse of OxyContin is illegal, and because people who are under the influence of OxyContin may also engage in other reckless and/or illegal behaviors, arrest and incarceration is always a possibility. Social withdrawal or ostracization, family discord, and a significantly diminished quality of life are all well within the realm of possibility for individuals who fail to enter a rehab center to get professional treatment for their addiction to OxyContin.

With a license to operate as a sub-acute hospital, we are equipped to care for individuals with complicated medical histories and offer. Our 146-bed center offers a three-phase treatment program that includes detox, residential, and partial hospitalization programming. Depending on the individual needs of our clients, the following are among the elements that may be included into a client’s customized treatment plan while participating in rehab at Mirror Lake:

Medically monitored detoxification: When clients come to Mirror Lake addicted to certain substances, such as OxyContin, they may require detox prior to engaging in our residential programming. When this is the case, men and women benefit from our medical staff’s expertise during the process of withdrawal by receiving the treatment they need as their bodies are cleared of the harmful substances that cause their addictions. Mirror Lake employs various protocols for delivering detox services, and the particular protocol used will be dependent upon the type of addiction that a client is battling.

Medication management services: While in detox, clients may receive daily medication management services. Monitored by our psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, and nurses, these services are also available on an as-needed basis to clients in our residential programming when medication is deemed necessary to manage the symptoms of an addiction and/or mental illness.

Individual therapy: Intended to be intensive and brief, individual therapy sessions are scheduled for each patient on a weekly basis. Our expertly trained counselors work with clients one-on-one and assist them in establishing short-term rehab goals, solving problems, and processing their addictions to substances such as OxyContin. Additionally, if a client was seeing a counselor prior to admission, that counselor can participate in these sessions with the client’s consent.

Family therapy: In order to help clients repair and restructure their relationships with their loved ones, our center facilitates family therapy sessions on a weekly basis. These sessions take place on our campus in Burns, Tennessee, and are led by our dedicated counselors and allow our clients, their family members, and other loved ones to heal together. By including these sessions as part of our rehab, we help our clients and those closest to them to move forward in a healthy and unified manner.
